Companion animals, be it dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, ferrets, hamster etc. can bring much joy to humans. A companion is kept for companionship and enjoyment. They are noted for their loyal and playful characteristics, for the attractive appearance or for their song. They also provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been show to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around,. There is a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, who are brought to human individuals who are confined. Walking a dog can provide exercise for not only the dog but also the human. The majorigy of American households includes a pet, it is only recently that science has begun to explore the relationship between people and their pets and the possible physical and emotional benefits of that relationship. Studies have shown that there is a strong emotional and psychological attachement between people and their pets. This is called the human-animal bond. Studies have revealed that pet owners view their pets as enhanceing the quality of family life by minimizing tension between family members and enhancing their owner's compassion for living things.
